Portland Timbers 2015 MLS Cup Winners

Timbers VS The Crew MLS Cup  Portland Timbers 2015 MLS Cup Winners,

after beating the Columbus Crew 2-1

in an exciting end to end battle for the cup.

The Timbers almost didn’t make the playoffs

this year, but an end of year push put their

15-11-8 record into the top 6 of the West

and into a head on collision course with the Columbus Crew who also finished 15-11-8. Only difference,

goal differential, Crew had a plus 5 and the Timbers only had a plus 2. The Crew have second highest

MLS goal scorer in Kei Kamara, but the Timbers have Diego Valeri, who put in the fastest MLS cup

goal at only 27 seconds into the match. Stage set, Timber dominate the first 15 minutes. At the 6:30

minute mark Lucas Melano picks out Rodney Wallace for a diving header to put Timbers up 2-0 with

less than 7 minutes gone by. Crew shell shocked, gather themselves by the 17th minute, when

pressure on the Timbers Goalie Adam Kwarasey puts the defense into a bad spot and the top

goal scorer for the Crew steps up and pulls one back with a turn around goal putting the match

at 2-1 now. From 18th minute till the 95th minute it was back and forth defensive battle with

Nat Borchers, Adam Ridgewell, Alvas Powell, and Jorge Villafana holding the Crew scoreless

in front of Kwarasey. Coach Caleb Porter had them all playing at top notch championship level

for the last 11 matches, hats off to da coach.

The Timbers pressed all game, 60th minute, corner kick to Wallace, almost goal, 70th minute,

Adi header, almost goal, 80th minute Borchers header, almost goal within inches. The 3D midfielders

Darlington, and the two Diego’s (Chara and Valeri) for the Timbers moved the ball from box to box

setting up the consent pressure on the Crew. What a great year for Will Johnson, Jack Jewsbury,

Fanendo Adi, Max Urruti, and the whole Timbers players and staff for a huge first time MLS Cup win.

The Crew had a great year knocking off the Supporter Sheild winners NY Red Bulls to advance to the

final, so heads high great footballers Ethan Finlay, Federico Higuain, Jack McInerney, Will Trapp,

Tony Tchani, Justin Meram and the whole Crew team, next year can be your year.

MLS Playoffs And 3 Great Shooting Drills

Shooting on goal

MLS Playoffs and 3 great shooting drills to help young soccer players improve their skills.

With the New York Red Bulls and FC Dallas winning the first two matches to move on, leaving

Sporting KC 2013 MLS Champions watching at home for the 2014 MLS Cup rolls on. Vancouver

Whitecaps were no match for the red hot FC Dallas team who many think is the squad to watch out for.

Next up will be Columbus Crew vs New England Rev’s and LA Galaxy takes on RSL which all be tough

matches with very potent offensive attacking teams. Seattle Sounders come in with best MLS

record this season and DC United return after a tough 2013 season for United, which seems hungry

to bring home the cup. Bradley Wright Phillips had a great 2014 season knocking in 27 goals only to

tie the MLS record putting the New York Red Bulls into the playoffs. Watching the great MLS players

shooting on goal, all came from years of practicing with drills to perfect striking skills to put that ball

in the back of the net. Enjoy the MLS Playoffs and 3 great shooting drills to help young soccer players improve their skills.

Drills For Soccer Skills Keeping The Ball On Target

Rev's vs Union MLS

Drills for soccer skills keeping the ball on target is one key elements soccer coaches look for from

time to time. Knowing that all positional field players will be called upon in some game to shoot on

goal, hoping to at least keep the ball on frame(goal). The key tips are:

1. Keep your knee over the ball as you strike the shot, this will help in shooting the ball over the goal

2. Don’t over power the ball, the idea is to hit it clean and straight, too much power means over the bar

3. Try not the lean back, keep your body straight or slightly over the ball will keep it down for the most part

4. The shot is many times just a hard pass if you can picture that in your mind as you are preparing for the shot

5. Angles are more important than power and speed of the ball, power comes later as you get better technique

6. A ball on goal(target) has a chance to score, it’s better to hit the ball slightly softer to insure a chance to score

Many drills have been shown for teaching goal scoring, here are some MLS results of drills for soccer

skills keeping the ball on target. [Read more…]

Teaching Players Head Ball Goals

Head ball goal NY Red Bulls

Teaching players head ball goals and how to keep the ball on frame. Many coaches know that

teaching players to head the ball downward helps in limiting balls going over the goal post.

This gives the ball a chance that the goalie might miss it and slip into the back of the net.

With the pace of the crossed ball, many times you really only need to redirect the ball not trying

increase the speed, just change the angle of the shot. Watching MLS matches, you will see pro

players trying just to redirect a cross with a flick of the head. The whole focus on any drill about

heading should result on forcing the ball lower towards the ground and a higher percentage of scoring.

Teaching players head ball goal techniques will put more goals per season on any club. [Read more…]

DC United Making A Run On The 2012 MLS Playoff’s

DC United is on a great run for the playoffs in Oct 2012, they are only points away. After 4 out

of 5 in the win category, the men in black are playing great defense to get a playoff seeding. Against

The New England Revolution, DC got down 1-0 in the 29th minute, only to turn around 2 minutes

later to score on a crossing run that left the ball on a great long shot making it 1-1. In the second half

the defense stiffened and in the 63rd minute after a “Play On” call by the ref, DC got the winner to take

the 3 points away from the Revolution. In the latest match against Toronto FC, both teams had a clean

sheet going into the 87th minute, when Toronto’s Goal Keeper made a big error and gave an easy goal to Salahi.

Marco Pappa strikes a 28 year shot into the upper right window of the goal in 1 minute and 45 seconds

into the match setting the tone for this MLS match. Crew’s Keeper Gruenebaum had no chance at

saving that blast that caught the mid-field off guard. The second goal comes only 19 minutes later

off a throw in mid field. Watch how Grazzini sets up D. Oduro with a great thru ball and wonderful

finish by the Fire striker putting the men in red up 2-0. Then 5 minutes later Segrres slides into a

red card, putting the Fire down to 10 men the rest of the match. Tony Tchani on the Crew finally
