Sport KC vs RSL MLS Cup 13

Penalty kicks great goalie saves MLS Cup 2013 was one to remember. Even low temp of 17 degrees

and ice on the field, could not keep the red hot Sporting KC from claiming their first MLS Cup title

as SKC and second MLS Cup for the team history, since beating Chicago Fire in the year 2000 under

goalie Tony Meola and defensive star Peter Vermes, now the head coach  of The Wiz(Sporting KC).

With balls bouncing off posts more than 7 times this match, it was only inches that separated a great

Real Salt Lake and this 2013 Sporting KC club. RSL opens the scoring in the 53rd minute with a great

no look chip pass from Kyle Beckerman to a nice chest trap just in front of a beautiful 27 yard shot from

Alvaro Saborio who buries it in the back of the net, putting red up 1-0. Sporting KC would knock at the

door all game until a head ball off Sporting KC’s star defender Aurelien Collin on a corner kick tied it up

1-1 in the 76th minute. Both teams fought all 90 minutes and extra time, but penalty kicks had to

decide it. It had to go 10 rounds of penalty shots for again Aurelien Collin to bury his PK and super

goalie Jimmy Nielson to stop multiple shots in winning 2013 MLS Cup. Penalty kicks great goalie saves

RSL vs LA G

Teaching goal scoring to U9,U11,U13,U14,U15,U16 using the MLS playoffs as great examples of

pressure strikes at goal. Working in the attacking third to keep the ball moving to open space wide,

then angle back into the 6 yd/14 yd danger area is the goal of any good offensive attack. Using ball

flicks off throw in head balls to excellent follow up on half volley shots, the goal is to spread out so

defensive deflections can become sometimes your best assist. In the Sporting KC match, you will see

both, a defensive deflection in front of the net right to Aurelien Collins and a beautiful half volley follow up

from Seth Sinovic. Another important offensive technique is the free kick cross into dangerous area,

witness Morales from Real Salt Lake not only do it once but twice in the same match for great scoring

opportunities. Crossing the ball into the 6 to 14 yard mark is so important but the spacing of the players

not to all go into the same area is even more important for the chance of the ball coming open to a

better shooting angle. These MLS videos are excellent for teaching goal scoring to U9,U11,U13,U14,U15,U16 players.

Dribbling Soccer Drills For U8, U10, U12, U14, U16

Dribbling Cuts By Pro's

Dribbling soccer drills for U8, U10, U12, U14, U16 and tips on how to improve them.

Many players ask what can they do on their off season?  Most coaches would say touch and dribbling

speed. In dribbling balance is so important in speed and quickness, start slowly and work on looking up

after you have touched the ball to move from one spot to another. This balance of looking up and

down is what will come natural after years of playing. It will only take a half second to look up and see

the field, after a while you will feel the defenders coming at you, so remember quick side to side moves

and changing the direction of the ball keeps them guessing. Watch these MLS pro’s during a match use

the drills in this video series, and how redirection / cut backs help them keep the ball under control to

set up a pass or shot. Heal passes, bicycle kicks and head ball flick goals are all a result of the build

up of the dribbling that got the ball there to produce the goal. Enjoy watching how dribbling soccer drills

for U8, U10, U12, U14, U16 can help score your next goal. [Read more…]

Offensive Soccer Tips In The Attacking Third

Clint Dempsey Seattle Sounders

Offensive soccer tips in the attacking third and putting pressure on the defense is what every coach

hunts for as they watch game film. With Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan roaming the MLS, there

is no shortage of great offensive soccer brewing here in the states. Some key tips to watch for in these

MLS game film clips are watching for simple basic shots not being over powering however the shots are

kept on frame so they have a chance to score. Deflections happen, direct free kicks are stroked not over

shot, and head balls are directed downward to keep the angle tougher for the goal keeper. When

chipping the balls from the wings, shoot to keep the ball between the 6yd line and the 14yd pk spot,

that’s a deadly zone for head ball goals with power. Watch these MLS pro’s and get your own offensive

soccer tips in the attacking third. See Landon Donovan put on a clinic with a hat trick of his own. [Read more…]

Teaching Players Head Ball Goals

Head ball goal NY Red Bulls

Teaching players head ball goals and how to keep the ball on frame. Many coaches know that

teaching players to head the ball downward helps in limiting balls going over the goal post.

This gives the ball a chance that the goalie might miss it and slip into the back of the net.

With the pace of the crossed ball, many times you really only need to redirect the ball not trying

increase the speed, just change the angle of the shot. Watching MLS matches, you will see pro

players trying just to redirect a cross with a flick of the head. The whole focus on any drill about

heading should result on forcing the ball lower towards the ground and a higher percentage of scoring.

Teaching players head ball goal techniques will put more goals per season on any club. [Read more…]

Goal Scoring Lessons And Striker Skills For All Forwards

wondolowski usa goal scorer

Goal scoring lessons and striker skills for all forwards can be seen as watching Chris Wondolowski of

US Men’s team. Wondo is putting on a striker clinic as he plays in the Gold Cup 2013 and now has

racked up 5 goals of many angles. Already Wondo has knocked in a hat trick with in 41 minutes in one

half, and two goals vs Cuba, to show his striker skills as his spacing around the 6 yard line shows his

awareness to stay open in tight spaces. Be on your toes strikers/forwards, you just never know when

the ball will come bouncing your way. Quick pokes at the ball and touching it away one-time are the

drills every striker should work on with in a 15 yard half circle from the goal mouth. On longer shots

like 18yards out, watch Joe Corona one time strike vs Cuba, that comes from many years of one time

shots from all angles at distance. Corona, Donovan, and Wondolowski all show you how not to over

power the ball, but just strike it clean and let the angle make the finishing touch. In a MLS match,

Soony Saad from Sporting KC had an example of a nice side volley inside the 6 yard line area as he

took what the defense was not clearing out, and had to make up a shot was just a reaction. Another

great striker who takes the touch with out over powering the ball would be Chris Rolfe of Chicago Fire,

watch as he touches the clip just past the keeper instead of looking for hard shot at goal. All these

examples are goal scoring lessons and striker skills for all forwards to master, watch below. [Read more…]

Using Spacing On Set Plays And Corner Kicks

San Jose vs LA Galaxy

Using spacing on set plays and corner kicks is so important to coaching in making sure all angles

are covered to finish a well played ball. The next rule by a player is to follow that spacing and being

ready for the strange bounce that brings that ball right to you within 9 yards of the goal. That’s the

difference between a win and a loss. Spacing is keeping yourself open so a team mate can find you,

sometimes it’s better to stop and stay open than move forward and be covered up by a defender.

Colorado Rapids, Sporting KC, and The San Jose Earthquakes, all show you through out their matches

the importance of spacing from attacking runs at goal with a cut back, to a well placed set piece chip

n head for a goal. Watch how these MLS players are using spacing on set plays and corner kicks. [Read more…]
