World Cup 2018 final 16 looks very interesting.

The 21st FIFA World Cup is midway into completion and there have been lots of thrills and frills. The group stages have featured lots of goals, a single goalless draw, 9 penalties and have been marked stunning by Germany’s early exit.

Out of the 32 countries that started the tournament, only 16 have made a cut into the knockout stage, which is the final stage of the world cup following the group stages. 16 teams – Brazil, France, Argentina, Uruguay, England, Peru, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Colombia, Croatia, Japan, Denmark, Switzerland, Russia, and Mexico – are billed to slug out the fest against each other starting from June 30 to July 15.

Likely Winners of the Knockout Stage

France Vs Argentina

France kicked off their world cup campaign on a high note and has displayed some scintillating attacking flair. The European top dog has not found much of the back of the net but they look poised to emerge winners against a disoriented and lackluster Argentina.

Uruguay Vs Portugal

Uruguay being the only team with a 100% winning record in this year’s FIFA world cup with their sturdy defense yet to concede a goal will be locking horns against Portugal on June 30. They have not been creative but may rely on their unyielding defense to help them move further. Portugal has been below average so far and may succumb to a defeat against Uruguay.

Brazil Vs Mexico

Five times world champions have topped the favorites chart right from day one. They looked shaky against Switzerland but discovered their rhythm against Costa Rica and Switzerland.

Mexico started the campaign with a dazzling performance causing an upset against Germany. Having caused an upset against Germany, they look potent enough to cause another against the Brazilian side.

Sweden Vs Switzerland

Sweden, toppers of their group are well organized and display the attitude of progressing beyond the knockout stage.

Switzerland had two under performing displays against Brazil and Costa Rica but secured a place for themselves in the knockout stage with a late and dramatic win against Serbia.

Belgium Vs Japan

Belgium has been enthralling with 3 wins out of 3. They have a pool of talents capable of beating Japan.

Japan managed to secure a knockout stage slot with a notable win against Colombia and a draw against the African side, Senegal. They are expected to display their character of resilience against the Red Devils.

Colombia Vs England

England’s flying start to the world cup campaign was brought to a halt by the Red Devils. Their squad of young talents saw them see off Tunisia and Panama to progress into the knockout stage.

Colombia after getting stunned by Japan, has been up and running and will look forward to continuing with their enthusiastic style of play against England.

Croatia Vs Denmark

Croatia’s world cup campaign so far has been a world of roses winning three of their group world cup stage games capped by thumping Argentina. With their sterile Midfield, creative attacking line, and stubborn backline they look poised to better their 1998 record.

Denmark laden with talents have had not had an exciting campaign and are deemed fortunate to be in the knockout stage.

Russia Vs Spain

It was a walk in the park for the hosts against Saudi Arabia and Egypt. They had an abysmal outing against Uruguay but may regain their momentum against Spain.

Spain so far has been struggling to discover their 2008 – 2012 rhythm. A draw against Portugal and Iran with a narrow win against Morocco has seen them navigate into the latter stage of the tournament. Considering their world cup wealth of experience, they may come out winners of this game.

Surprising Moments

This year’s FIFA world cup edition is not going down without some eyebrow-raising moments. Of the surprising moments, Germany’s seems to be the most notable. The 2014 world cup winners were tipped as one of the favorites to win the tournament. They started the tournament on a low after their surprising loss to Mexico. They managed to raise their hopes with a win against Sweden with a little to spare and finally were dumped out by the Asian side South Korea.

The Final Four

With the knockout stage winners yet to be decided there are some predictions on the teams that will make a cut into the final four. We might anticipate seeing a Brazil Vs France and England Vs Russia the coming weeks.
